MEDIA ADVISORY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Council of Canadians in Victoria to discuss Canada’s abandonment of peacekeeping and how to restore it.

As the 50th anniversary of UN peacekeeping approaches, Steve Staples will be in Victoria to discuss his paper “Marching Orders: How Canada abandoned peacekeeping and why the UN needs us now more than ever.” This urgent new report commissioned by the Council of Canadians exposes the alarming consequences of Canada’s role in Afghanistan and calls on the Canadian government to withdraw from Afghanistan and return to its role as a leader in peacekeeping, peace diplomacy and peacebuilding.

At the same time, Steve will launch his book, Missile Defence: Round One, on the implications for a potential new arms race, the weaponization of space and Canadian defence and foreign policy.

WHO: A defence analyst and writer based with the Polaris Institute in Ottawa, Steven Staples is often interviewed on defence issues by CBC-TV’s National News and other media across Canada. Founded in 1985, the Council of Canadians is Canada’s largest citizens’ advocacy organization with chapters and members throughout the country. The Canadian Department of Peace Initiative seeks a new federal department to implement a culture of peace in Canada and abroad.
