Campaign to Establish a Canadian Department of Peace

Department of Peace: :

Bill to establish a Department of Peace introduced in Parliament on Nov. 30, 2011

added December 1st, 2011

The number of the new Bill to establish a Department of Peace, introduced by MP Alex Atamenenko (BC Southern Interior), is C-373.

Alex Atamanenko was joined at a press conference on Nov. 30 by fellow peace advocates, along with Elizabeth May of the Green Party and Liberal Jim Karygiannis to herald the introduction later in the day of his Private Member’s Bill. Atamenko’s bill is a slightly amended version of retired NDP MP Bill Siksay—s bill from the last parliament, notable for the non-partisan support it had gathered.

  1. I am always heartened to read of the ongoing efforts by Canadians to establish a Department of Peace. With support of The Peace Alliance, we established a MA campaign in 2005 and brought two more MA Congressmen on to the bill (now HR 808), introduced in 2001 by Congressman Dennis Kucinich (Two others in our state had co-sponsored it from the beginning.) I am happy to alert some, who choose to move away from Dept. of Peace support, given that the “the time is not right”, to the possibility that Canada may have a Department in their government which focuses on non-violent solutions to conflict, before we, in the U.S., establish one!
